How to Clean Inside Windows Without Leaving Streaks

Clean windows can make a surprisingly big difference to how bright and fresh your home feels. While regular professional window cleaning takes care of the outside, the inside of your windows can still collect fingerprints, dust, grease and general household dirt.

The good news is that cleaning the inside of your windows doesn't need to be difficult. With the right approach and a few simple tools, you can get a much clearer, streak-free finish.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

You don't need lots of expensive equipment to clean the inside of your windows.

A few simple items are usually enough:

• A clean microfibre cloth

• A bucket of warm water

• A small amount of washing-up liquid

• A separate dry microfibre cloth

• A glass-cleaning cloth or squeegee

• A vacuum cleaner or soft brush for removing dust

The most important thing is to use clean equipment. A dirty cloth can simply move grease and dirt around the glass rather than removing it.

START BY REMOVING DUST

Before putting any water or cleaning solution onto the glass, remove loose dust and dirt from the window frame, corners and sill.

A quick vacuum around the edges of the frame can prevent dust and dirt from turning into muddy water when you start cleaning.

DON'T USE TOO MUCH CLEANING PRODUCT

One of the biggest mistakes when cleaning glass is using too much detergent.

A small amount of washing-up liquid in warm water is usually sufficient. Too much product can leave a residue on the glass, which can actually make streaks more noticeable.

For particularly greasy windows, such as kitchen windows, you may need to clean the glass twice.

CLEAN THE GLASS

Work across the glass using your damp microfibre cloth or applicator, making sure you reach the corners and edges.

If you're using a squeegee, start at the top and work down the glass, wiping the blade after each pass.

Take your time around the edges, where dirt and cleaning solution can often collect.

FINISH WITH A CLEAN, DRY CLOTH

Once you've cleaned the glass, use a clean, dry microfibre cloth to remove any remaining moisture around the edges.

If you notice streaks once the glass has dried, don't immediately add more cleaning product. Try buffing the area with a clean, dry microfibre cloth first.

It's also worth checking the window from different angles and in natural daylight. This can reveal marks that aren't obvious under artificial lighting.

DON'T FORGET THE FRAMES AND SILLS

The glass is only part of the window.

Frames and sills can collect dust, insects, cobwebs and general grime, so give them a wipe at the same time.

Keeping these areas clean can make the whole window look considerably better.

NEED HELP WITH THE OUTSIDE?

Cleaning the inside of your windows yourself is a great way to keep them looking fresh between professional cleans.

For the outside, particularly higher windows or larger properties, a professional pure water window cleaning system can make the job considerably easier and safer.
